My Thinkpad X1 Carbon (6th Gen) came out 7 years ago. I bought it for $400 in 2020. I've upgraded the SSD, the battery, and the Wi-Fi seven chipset. That's one of the reasons I really like my ThinkPad, it's a really good machine.
I'm going to wait until the arm #Thinkpad is stable under Linux, and probably pick one up second hand. I don't expect that to be until probably this winter at the soonest. By then my laptop will be pushing 8 years old. I think 8 years is enough to upgrade.
I tried to avoid buying hardware new. I always end up buying my laptops about 2 years out. That seems to be the sweet spot.

I don't understand laptops, they're like toys. The DeepCool Tesseract tower has served me for over 11 years and the upgrade options are a bit better than notebooks
