I have been surprised at how sensitive 4K Blu-Rays are to things like fingerprints. You have to be VERY CAREFUL in how you handle these discs. All it takes is a single smudge or bit of dust to glitch out the playback.
The problem is usually easily solved with a microfiber cloth. But I never had to keep a microfiber cloth handy when using DVDs or regular Blu-Rays.
@jalefkowit I think there is a direct correlation to the data density. I've found the same thing, Blurays are more sensitive to scratches than DVDs, which are more sensitive to scratches than CDs. At this point I have to try pretty hard to make a CD unreadable, while it isn't uncommon to have issues with Blurays.
@wagesj45 Yeah, I should have thought of CDs too, because those were even more rugged than DVDs in my experience. You could dig a CD out of your couch cushions and it’d play just fine.
@jalefkowit @wagesj45 Also, some Blu-ray and 4K discs could have significant scratches coming from the replication factory (mostly coming from discs made in Mexico which has poor quality control) that factors in as well. You have to check them in bright light to see them.
@jalefkowit @wagesj45 Here's a thread of the various replication plants and which studios and boutique labels use them.
