When I was a kid, my parents weren't home much. I would get home from school, fix myself something to eat and tune into PBS to watch Dr. Who. My schedule plus the nature of broadcast TV meant that I got to see most of some of the stories. Luckily, I just discovered that all the classic episodes are on Tubi!

I found Dr. Who during the Tom Baker years so that's what I'm watching. I just finished Robot which was ok. Sort of a transitional story arc but not super interesting. However, after that comes Ark in Space which is, as the kids would say, a banger.

The Ark in Space was great! Excellent story, ambiguous villains and fantastically cheesy effects. I loved it! Now I'm on to The Sontaran Experiment. It follows on directly from The Ark in Space and is shaping up to be just as good. Kudos to the props department for the evil robot!

I was thinking about it and there are a lot of similarities between Ark in Space (1975) and Alien (1979). Unstoppable, exoskeleton covered aliens that use humans to brood their young, check. Tense scene crawling through maintenance ducts never knowing when the aliens might strike, check. Crew in plastic covered sleep pods, check. Killing an alien with a rocket engine, check. Hmmm.... 😅

@IPXFong it's a cracker, and if you're going chronologically, you're not far away from the masterpiece of Genesis.

Excellent! My memory of the series is fragmentary. I remember parts of a lot of shows. I'm actually really looking forward to The Pirate Planet. 🏴‍☠️😁

@IPXFong I think Pirate Planet and Stones of Blood back in 1978 are my first, dim memories of Doctor Who as a really young kid.

You've got a lot of Tom Baker to go before those though and some real classics, so enjoy.

@IPXFong John Carpenter's Dark Star (1974) was co-written by Dan O'Bannon, who was the main writer for Alien (1979), and there are a number of similar elements between those movies lol. He clearly knew that the very mediocre student film had a lot of good ideas in it lol

(Another fun fact: Dark Star also features a “hyperspace jump” special effect done by Dan O'Bannon that is very very similar to Star Wars (1977), because George Lucas was so impressed with it that he hired him to do some special effects for Star Wars)

@nytpu
I've never seen Dark Star. Sounds delightful!

I've also been reading Valerian and Laureline. French BD from the 60s and 70s. It's pretty obvious that Lucas took some "inspiration" from there as well. 😁

@ipxfong @nytpu
Dark Star is an awesome bad movie!!! But you do want a copy that has the deleted scenes that make the events (more or less 🤗) make sense.

It's all the beach ball's fault!
