I wouldn't say "efficient", but "underfunded". How much more could public broadcasters do with adequate government funding, and be truly independent from advertisers?
Speaking of media funding, the #CommunityRadioInitiative is looking for support to get funding for Canada's #CommunityRadio stations from the tax on digital broadcasters (ie. Google and Meta). Some stations are hanging on by a thread; this funding would see them thrive.

The problem is that a lot of people see "government funded" as the opposite of independent. Like if the feds pay all your bills, can you truely criticise them?
Maybe a more diversified funding model spreads that risk.
They're funded by the public, broadcasting for the public. Which means we expect them to criticize the government.
Or, if I'm feeling cynical in Canada, by the King (the CBC is a Crown corporation), which may explain why they're so sycophantic and think I care what he's doing for Christmas.
