Don't give Jeff Bezos one dime of your hard earned money today!

@fmhilton you do realize the difference between buying nothing and not buying on amazon, right? I'm pretty sure your intent isn't to paint amazon as the only marketplace worth spending money on; so I'm pointing the discrepancy :)

@7heo

Amazon is one of the leading on-line retailers and they make most of their profits on Black Friday and Cyber Monday like most merchants everywhere. Temu and Etsy are two of the others..many that can't be counted.

In the same vein, don't spend money ANYWHERE.
Skip the sales, the promos and the culture of drop until you shop.

Consumerism is killing the planet, and we're all guilty of it.

@fmhilton consumerism, absolutely. Injecting money in the local, individual owned shops, on the other hand, is IMHO how to best mitigate the numerous and severe adverse effects of capitalism.

On a side note, I did not realize this was black Friday. So I *might* have missed some important context about your post when reacting on it. My apologies.

@7heo I should have prefaced the hashtag

@fmhilton in all honesty, it is absolutely fair to expect everyone and their mom to know it is "bLaCk FrIdAy!!!11". I'm sure my family knows.

I'm just a weird hermit living at the edge of the disc, so realistically that's on me. ;)

But, yes, the hashtag would have definitely tipped me off. Not sure it'd be needed for anyone else tho...

@fmhilton @7heo Agree that we should #buynothing when at all feasible. When we buy something, however, it makes sense to buy something which helps mitigate some of the effects of production. A bike would be a good example.

@tmstreet @7heo I do try to buy with a mind to not doing any more damage than possible to the rest of the world.
It's why I don't have a car, and I don't have children. I walk or ride my bike everywhere. Even when it's cold outside like today I'll be taking a long hike to get my new glasses done. 4 miles round trip, and there are no buses or cabs in this town-a very rural one.
It's good exercise, too..a chance to walk off Thanksgiving day food!

@fmhilton @7heo Good for you. Also, you are one of my favorite posters here.

@fmhilton

Or any other day.

Brands have long abandoned amazon, just try searching for a lot of the big name brands and you won;t find them anymore... what you will find is a hundred cheap chinese knock of products, that are likely to break after a few uses, or are actually dangerous to use. Louis Rossman did a whole expose of fuses and crimps sold on there that were dangerous, 2amp fuses that required in excess of 10 amps before they would eventually fail, crimps that don;t actually crimp/clamp on to wires and can be pulled apart by hand.

I cancelled prime in Jan 24, I've still bought a few things from there, but about 1/4 of what I used to... and I won;t be buying anything for anyone this xmas and have told everyone that I don't want anything from there, nor do I want gift cards.

I actually ended up switching back to ebay for a lot of things and got better deals and better quality... it's weird how things go.

@fmhilton Agreed! Also, all the other stores that rolled back their DEI policies, not just today, but every day!
