Watching their 'Temporary Feeding Territories'.
Not often forming on ebbs as more inclined to follow tide, from low tide onwards birds hold and defend small areas of mudflat, many close to shore. Shadowing neighbours along invisible boundaries, chasing off incomers, all great fun to watch.
(Project is whens/hows/whys of variable Redshank counts on #Medway in winter. Keeping me busy/happy!)
