Yes, distributing GPL'd binaries with an MIT licence is allowed IFF source code is available (not necessarily with the distro) AND the GPL licence is attached and GPL conditions are followed for the GPL binary part of the distro. The MIT license applies only to the parts not covered by the GPL license. The MIT license doesn't diminish the GPL license.
ie: This is license proliferation.
