Hm. I use sshfs to mount home directories from other computers all the time. sshfs seems to work better than connecting to other servers with the file manager.
I gave up on Ubuntu and derivatives a while ago. First it was the Unity desktop that drove me to Mint's LMDE with MATE, but since my servers were running Debian I've switched my laptops and desktops to Debian with MATE.
And to think I was deeply involved in our Ubuntu LoCo at one time...
