Decided to try playing a little bit of single player Quake 2 again for some mindless FPS fun. It's not my favorite, but it's one of the few big ones of the Win9x era that I haven't yet completed.

Took a bit to get started because I decided to use a source port, which in turn required ripping (foobar2000) + converting (fre:ac) CD audio tracks to OGG.

This first dungeon is very weird. It has entire sections that you might miss if you're not careful, and it's not obvious where various level exits go until you try them. One turned out to be the main exit, launching an extended in-game scene before I was ready - oops.

It seems my capture is a twisted mage named Irenicus, and I was freed in the chaos of an attack on him by the Shadow Thief guild of assassins - with whom Sarevok tried to paint me as affiliated in BG1 as part of framing me for murder in Candlekeep. They're hostile to me too

Meant to say "statue" not "status". I brought them to the creature in the tank, but it didn't respond? Maybe because I stole the genie flask from a dryad, and/or because it appears to only be a replica?

This was a pretty intense scene that I won't describe due to spoilers:

Turns out the tanks aren't recruitable companions, but rather poor servants/prisoners who've been experimented on magically, and are now living a limbo-like existence, barely aware of their surroundings. One wants a djinni and status that I found before, so I'll bring them.

Started over, picking Plate Mail +1 and Helm of Balduran as overall best importable items, and ditching all party members so that they get reset to vanilla BG2 stats.

Interestingly Minsc is a level higher. I guess they expect you to pick him up earlier than I did in BG1?

Show thread

Oh snap: Besides Golden Pantaloons, you can only import a total of 2 items from BG1 - one from each of two very small lists. And you get them anyway if you don't import. Looks like my best options are Helm of Balduran and either Leather +2 or Plate +1 armor.

BG1 go-backs: The game does some pixel-hunty stuff, including hiding easter eggs in tiny spots around the world. Fortunately holding the Tab key highlights these.

The game's fixed isometric perspective makes it hard to find obscured doors, leading to tedious mouse hovering

Trying to find my BG1 equipment in the BG2 starting dungeon. I have no idea where it is because I haven't played BG2.

Found a room with...suspended characters? Is this like Dungeon Master where you basically wake up characters in the dungeon to form your party?

Currently leaning towards NPC reset to vanilla BG2, but we'll see.

Making some mod and config changes for a better BG2 experience:
- revert BG1 music fixes
- revert main menu change
- disable pause while on automap screen (this was a BG2 feature that I was torn on for BG1)

The only Spider-Man game I ever paid much attention to is probably not the one getting a remaster here:

Show thread

Imagine the arrogance of thinking that with 100 other titles released in your franchise, yours is the one that most deserves both the generic name AND a remaster - and that people should know what the heck you're even talking about.

I bet it's less than 5 years old too lol

Show thread

What is this even a remaster of? There are literally 100 Spider-Man games out there lmao

Stop it. Get some help.

I also need to decide whether I want to manually compare and tweak my surviving canon party members to better align with vanilla BG2 while retaining XP/levels/spells, or just kick them out of my party before transferring in order to completely reset them to BG2 defaults.

First order of business is playing enough of early BG2 to figure out how the BGT-Weidu mod brings over my stuff and characters.

Good news is I don't have to re-fight Sarevok to juggle BG1 inventory - especially since I probably forgot the Golden Pantaloons!

Show thread

Having finished non-EE Baldur's Gate 1 via the Baldur's Gate Trilogy mod, I plan to dip my toes into BG2 at least enough to get reasonably happy with how my stuff transfers over.

I may then take a break from it, but this will serve as my Baldur's Gate 2 thread in any case.

I think that's most of the thoughts I wanted to get off my chest before moving on.

I definitely recommend Baldur's Gate 1, but probably check it out via BGEE which is likely its most accessible form in 2022.

See you in Baldur's Gate 2!

I also cheesed this a bit via another quality-of-life mod that both made more items stackable, and increased maximum stack sizes. This is desperately needed because otherwise your inventory fills up extremely quickly, and carrying enough ammo is a pain. BGEE tweaked this too

Show thread

There is also "inventory tetris" in the form of limits on both number of inventory slots and carrying capacity. Being an obsessive looter, however, I cheesed this a bit with a quality-of-life mod that adds BG2 portable containers to BG1, which BGEE also seems to have done.

Items: The game absolutely showers you with loot, which is great. There are many ways to kit out any party.

However, a frustrating limitation on stacking magical protection gear forces armor users to choose between magic armor, and non-magic armor + magical jewelry. Why?!

Show thread

Also, area of effect spells don't work particularly well in the Infinity Engine because your line of sight is too short to provide enough room to deploy them without high risk of friendly fire. I only used AoE spells to cheese off-screen enemies that I had prior knowledge of
