It’s still so amazing to me that I never saw a bald eagle until I was around 10 years old, and now I can see THREE at a local park and another one on the drive home, a few blocks from my house!

Eagle number one, soaring overhead, looks much like the standard adult bald eagle: white head with sharp yellow beak, wide straight dark brown wings and matching body, and white tail feathers. There is some white mottling on the wings and a distinct dark brown border on the tail feathers, however, which make this an immature: almost certainly a fourth year bird achieving its majority!

The second eagle is an adult bald eagle with distinct color blocks: white head and tail, brown wings and body. It's flying at an angle with its wings arched, so its silhouette is a little less iconic than the flying T of the first eagle, but the color tells the tale!

The third eagle is an immature bird you could almost take for a light morph red-tailed hawk: dark brown and white making a complex pattern on the wings and body. However, the wide wings and proportions are the same as the other eagles, and the large wicked beak. The wings do look different because the feather edge is ragged and irregular: from my reading, this makes this likely a second-year immature, as does the mostly dark 'hood' of brown feathers on the head. I love the intricate pattern on the coverts, varying feather by feather so it looks like a finely beaded shawl in brown and white.

A photo from below of a red-breasted sapsucker flying away from a heavy oak bough, a maze of spring-green leaves criss-crossing behind it. The bird has a scarlet head and breast and a pale yellow belly. Its extended wings are finely striped or checked in black and white, and the sunlight shows through them. The tail is forked and the shining black beak is prominent, with the dark eye and a white facial mark just visible past it. The wings are fully open with the lead feathers flirted up for a quick powerful flap!
