‘Ella…was held in police custody for more than 12 hours, was not allowed to telephone her parents or a solicitor, and her student accommodation was raided by police at 2am on Friday.’

The more I read about this raid on a #Quaker meeting house of young pacifist, but politically and climate concerned women…the more I want to know who in the #Met authorised it. They need to be held to public account…what honestly has happened to policing by consent of the people?

Yesterday while on the upper east side, right behind the MET in Central Park. I watched a NYPD cruiser berate a small group of musicians playing jazz because they had a small speaker. What really irked me about it was that the officers didn’t get out of their cruiser and have a conversation. The officer driving used his PA speaker from the cruiser, the irony! Then to further the spectacle of how we’ve lost the plot here, he’s driving on a path littered with NYC pedestrians of all walks of life on a spring NYC day in a goddamn cruiser. Policing in this country needs a serious overhaul with federal guidelines. I no longer believe it’s salvageable in any capacity.

edit: this is still so visceral an image to me of how disconnected that organization is. As a black man in America there are many reasons for me to tell my son to stay away from police. Yesterday he got to see a simple interaction and he’s not even a decade old. A young child thinks they could have handled the situation better. What are we doing as a society?!
