Watching the Federation of our Mastodon instance in real-time: https://watch.burningboard.net
Some statistics from a smaller Germany based Mastodon instance (burningboard.net)
We currently have 109 active users (logged in during the last 30 days).
The PostgreSQL Database size is 16.6GB
The media-data (S3) size is 201 GB with 775544 files.
The monthly traffic is around 900GB, 82% of that is IPv6 and just 18% is legacy IPv4.
Hardware (VM Sizing):
- 8 Altara Neoverse-N1 ARM64 CPU cores
- 16 GB DDR4 Ram
- 100 GB NVMe SSD
Software-Stack:
- Debian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm) aarch64
- Mastodon v4.3.7
- PostgreSQL 17.4
- Ruby 3.4.2
- Monitoring through Grafana/Loki and Uptime Kuma
The low-power ARM system can handle the Mastodon instance without issues and even has some headroom left for future growth
Backups are only good as long as they work.
Spent this morning, restoring the backup of our Mastodon instance burningboard.net to a fresh virtual machine in Proxmox and did some validation that it is valid, complete, restorable and the disaster recovery documentation is up to date.
Everything worked perfectly
Next restore-test: 10/2025
I think I've given up on getting Mastodon running in Docker. Not really necessary since the non-Docker solution is well-supported (and I have dedicated hardware set up to run it), and ultimately, didn't solve my overall problem, which was that upgrading brings my Raspberry Pi to its knees when it goes to optimize the web bits.
Neither of these are a pain point to me. Search is the pain when starting out hosting a small server #MastoAdmin https://oisaur.com/@renchap/114319708851660313
Quick poll for Mastodon server administrators : what is your biggest pain point between those two?
You can add a bit more detail in a reply, and I am not interested in other areas.
I'm in agreement with this lemmy.world post and will enforce the same policy here and on my other instances relating to the #Nicole spam issue.
Anybody working on maintaining #iftas fedicheck ? This was a pretty critical service that I feel like had a ton of potential. It's not even on github anymore ;_____;

It's currently hosting a GTS instance with a single solitary account on it (guess who's account). The thing was registered in March, but to my knowledge hasn't actually been throwing out the usual DM's. It may be an innocent site, but if your instance is proan to a lot of DM's from her you may want to consider a block to be safe. Mine doesn't get too much of her attention but some of the larger ones are definitely ones she's a fan of.
#MastoAdmin
Not sure why the explore part of my server never shows anything. (squatch.online/explore) This is where the trending stuff is. Every time I get a notification that a trend needs manually approving the trend isn’t there in the admin panel #MastoAdmin #Mastoson
Okay, this spam message is becoming ridiculously ubiquitous and seems to be infecting every Mastodon server. What's the story/motivation behind this?
I'm implementing some mitigation steps at the WAF level to keep this from getting to any more of theATL.social, but I was curious as if anyone had any background on the overall scam/motivation?
+1 for this really awesome little utility. I can keep an eye on the throughput through my network's WAN interfaces.
It's SoftPerfect's NetWorx. Completely cross-platform, too.
Pushed a ton of changes to https://www.mastoreqs.com that should make it less of an eye chart and much easier to navigate, especially on mobile.
Dependencies are broken out into multiple matrices, notes are color coded, there is also a quick navigation bar on the side to jump directly to particular components.
Enjoy. Also, upgrade your shit #MastoAdmin.
Someone on my instance got a DM from a fedichick from a server we have limited. How is this possible?
This can’t seem to find a way to unsubscribe from these as an end user.
Am I blind, or has that been overlooked?
This doesn’t really affect me as I’m on a single user instance, but I know lots of admins have been asking for it for a while:
There’s finally a way to email announcements to users of your instance: (merged and available on nightly, no idea when it’ll be merged to a release)
