I have simmed and soldered and achieved blinky blinky!

Next step. It's not bright enough. Buying a logic level relay and some T10 LED bulbs. I'm going to try some things.

Investigating old boards always reveals interesting hacks that make me wonder what this was the issue back in the days.

Here's a Stern driver board from early 80s with a DIY heat sink in one solenoid drive transistor. I wonder what it was and who came up with this? It apparently was something that fired long and often, heating up the transistor. Looking at the flip side, I see this specific transistor has been replaced earlier.

Okay, still need to wire stuff up and do some testing, but the changes for the adapter board:
- Added a USB-C connector because we're gonna be doing some shenanigans with it. Gonna pass the data signals and ground to the Brook UFB.
- VBUS coming from the USB port will power-on the adapter and input boards but be disconnected from the Brook UFB until those are fully booted.
- Once that happens, well connect the Brook UFB's power rail with the P-channel MOSFET and let it do its thing.

I have absolutely no idea how well this will work, but I'll be testing the idea once I get the breakout boards in. If it does work, it solves a ton of issues with the project. #electronics

I always loved this feature in Williams system 7, 9 and early 11 boards. They have a 7-segment display that gives a rough estimate what's happening (or not happening) when the thing boots. Previously and after first gen system 11 we just had to look at the two diagnostic LEDs and hope to see something. While not strictly necessary in the grand scheme, it was a fun detail. #pinball #pinrepair #electronics #repair #retrotech

I got a free DVD/VHS player the other day! My work was getting rid of a bunch of old electronics and they let me take this home.

I didn't have a VHS player before, and I think it would be a lot of fun to track down some old sci-fi movies on VHS — maybe Goodwill or a garage sale.

Also I had previously been copying DVDs to our Jellyfin server (which is nice) or using a USB DVD drive in the Raspberry Pi we use as a streaming box, but this is quicker and more convenient.
