@cypnk I warned you about proprietary software bro
I told you dog

Don’t tell a secret on the phone
Don’t whisper their hairs made of microphone
Don’t tell anyone anything that could melt your brain on me

I saw the answer written in bark
Carved into the trees at Ravenna Park
Committed to memory, but the feeling was not quite sane
In my brain

Don’t tell a secret on the phone
Don’t whisper their hairs made of microphone
Don’t tell anyone anything that could melt your brain on me

Choice is a good thing,, there is something for beginners to advanced users. Problem is no one can agree on what to suggest for any given situation.

I use Debian but would probably recommend Mint to beginners, then help people transition to a full free software system where closed firmware isn't needed, tis is not easy sometimes you 'just need' closed firmware.

We need to understand the needs of that user and suggest accordingly.

Apparently Zoom straight up lied about conferences being E2E encrypted, and didn’t tell anyone that they were passing personally identifiable data to Facebook & Google for years.

They have just had their ass handed to them by the FTC, and members of a class action lawsuit will be receiving compensation. Also… maybe don’t use Zoom unless your employer makes you. 😬

apparently 'crypto mining' actually refers to something to do with computers, and the stuff i've been extracting from underneath my house is asbestos

Software Industry:

Libraries are too hard to manage, we should use services instead.

Programmers:

Sounds great. So what's the build and deploy process for services?

Software Industry:

The what now?

Programmers:

Uh, make and install? How do we get the services connecting to our code that calls them?

Software Industry:

Oh, that!

We are pleased to say that we have absolutely no idea. All that stuff is an ops problem. By the way, you're also doing ops now. Good luck.

People usually consider IRC an online only medium, so it's nice to see us mentioned in the Real World!
Thanks to @fsf for the mention in this months newsletter.

@lightweight
This is one of the reasons the 2019 and recent attacks on Richard Stallman were wrong and unjust on so many levels.

And 'ungrateful' is perhaps the wrong word - it's self-defeating and incredibly petty. It's lashing out at those who are most committed to divesting themselves of power they feel uncomfortable wielding. They are actively trying to use their privilege to raise up those who haven't benefited from similar privilege, rather than just feathering their own nests (which is what proprietary and even, to a point, permissively open source advocates, do).

I'm seeing people hating on the #FOSS community, implying that it's exclusionary & lacking diversity. That it's only serves developers. I think that's quite ungrateful. #FOSS explicitly removes the artificial barriers between developers & users structurally present in any other form of software dev. #FOSS devs can't put knowledge & expertise in the heads of users. But, by using the GPL, they can create possibility for all. Permissionless participation. Inspiring people to want to learn. 1/2
