When I'm asked why OpenBSD is good and that I want to reply honestly, I have no argument.

From a technical point of view, I can't tell any strong benefits using OpenBSD, NetBSD or FreeBSD over Linux, although this doesn't mean they are bad.

It would be easy for me to be "cargo-culting" facts, being a "fanboy" or enumerating features that are exclusive to one (and they are rare, except if you are looking for the very very same feature!).

The truth is that what one OS will do better than an other, it will also do worse in another area.

It's important that we keep the BSD systems as relevant Linux alternatives: for software diversity, innovation and freedom of choice.

Please, boycott Google's email service Gmail. Here is why you should do so:

They are considering almost all small email servers as spam, this mean Google users have to look in their spam folder when they receive email from someone considered small. This kills freedom.

On top of that, gmail addresses are the biggest source of spam around nowadays, isn't it sarcastic?

There are a few good email provider around that are free, some other are paid but really cheap. If something is free, you should ask yourself how they make money.

Lot of fun tonight! short wave listening after I moved to a elevated and isolated place for a better signal reception.

The (3 wheels bike) is awesome for this because I was able to use my laptop while sitting comfortably in my seat, water at hand.

I did meet NOBODY while staying at this place for 2 hours :D

I have been able to record radios in the 15, 12 and 10 meters bands and also in the 70cm band using a on Skywave distro (work out of the box)

New #introduction post from this instance : I'm a 28-years old sysadmin from Lyon, France. I love #IT, #biking, #trains and #literature. I can speak and understand French, English and Japanese. I use #Fedora on my laptop and #OpenBSD, #Debian and Alpine Linux on my servers. I also love tinkering things and do some manual works from time to time.

TIL Seafile (community edition) libraries default is to keep all old data in history.

And that one needs to run a garbage collector process to free old data.

Anyone else seeing #OpenBSD syslog performing a PTR lookup for it's own(the syslog servers: PTR? xxx.xxx.168.192.in-addr.arpa ) IP address with every remote syslog item received (using -u)
This feels like a recent change as my own DNS server rate limited me after a recent syspatch

upgraded the top plate of my #mntpocketreform to match the rest of the casing (and for better thermals & wifi reception) and put a lovely #guix sticker on it

Now I'm back on a motorbike, I decided to wear those highly flashy and reflective jackets to be seen by other on the road.

It's hard to find if it's actually useful or counter productive, any thoughts?

I'm also looking for advices to improve my visibility from behind, I have a huge 56 liters Kawasaki top case almost hiding me, and it does seem super well equipped in reflective stuff on it.

@RavShaul The highest supported level is 802.11ac. But of course there are caveats:

OpenBSD will run an 11ac hostap only with a compatible Broadcom wifi card supported by the bwfm(4) driver. You would need to track such a device down first. And it is not going to perform better than an external AP. You would likely end up with a pcengines APU or similar device running OpenBSD, using a set of antennas the bfwm device was not tested and certified with. The cards are in M.2 format so a suitable M.2 to MiniPCIe adapter will also be needed. The antenna connectors on these cards are tiny and fragile, they break easily.

bwfm devices run almost everything in firmware, with a full internal 802.11 stack. This firmware is not getting any updates. I am not even sure if the firmware was patched for known WPA2 vulnerabilities. We run the WPA handshake in the kernel for this reason. The handshake is timing-sensitive and there are known issues where clients fail to connect due to handshake timeouts.

If you can live with all that, sure, it will work.

I'm quite sure there is a korok there 👀

On Linux, if you installed Firefox from Flatpak and you have choppy/stuttering video rendering, it's a Firefox packaging bug. I don't know how to explain, but it looks like my video player as drunk too much caffeine :flan_XD:

The solution is to install ffmpeg 23.08:

flatpak install runtime/org.freedesktop.Platform.ffmpeg-full/x86_64/23.08

package in is trying to use ffmpeg 24.08 although it's not compatible, which leads to weird video rendering.

Wanna try fish shell 4.0.0, the latest release featuring a Rust rewrite, but it's not available in your package manager yet?

Build it from sources :flan_thumbs:

- install git, cargo and rust
- git clone github.com/fish-shell/fish-she
- cd fish-shell
- git checkout 4.0.0
- cargo build --profile=release

The 3 binaries (fish, fish_indent, fish_key_reader) will be available in target/release/, you can move them somewhere in your $PATH

As a reminder, I'm hosting the service openports.pl to easily search stuff in ports/packages collection.

The server is running -current and is publishing the list of all snapshots it went through. This can be useful if you are looking for information about working / defective snapshots.

Thanks @OpenBSDAms for the free hosting VM

-current now supports USB3 speeds in xhci(4) for isochronous endpoints, e.g: such as uvideo(4) USB webcams.

kirill@ modified src/sys/dev/usb/{xhci,usb_subr}.c: sys/xhci: support of USB 3.0 speeds

OK: mglocker@

kirill@ modified src/sys/dev/usb/uvideo.c: sys/uvideo: support of USB 3.0 speeds

OK: mglocker@

This follows work that has happened in recent months to improve the uvideo(4) driver, V4L2 compatibility, supporting more devices, more closely aligning behaviour with Linux/Windows so that userland consumers are happy.

Took years to get here. Why Scheme? Why Lisp? They asked. Here's my reasons. Originally created for symbolic manipulation. What that means to me. Code is data. Programming is just more than a means for computation. It *SHOULD* serve as a means of organising ideas. What more powerful way of organising these ideas if your data can be your source code. We get flexibility. And yeah, we lispers get the value of everything but the cost of nothing. But we live in 2025. We have our ways. Cc @civodul #guix

Answer to the PyPI riddle

Okay, I think it's time to reveal the answer to social.treehouse.systems/@mgor.

Well, on wide screens you have a sidebar on the left of the project page; and on narrow screen, we have to go to "Project details". There we have "Verified details" above, and "Unverified details" below. If "Project links" are in "Verified details", then trusted publishing was used; if they're in "Unverified details", it was not used.

Magnificent #UI design, isn't it?
