Taiwanese Student Nearly Ends Up HOMELESS After AirBnB Cancels Booking Over Coronavirus Fears
@salixlucida thats not racism. paranoia or phobia maybe but not racism.
The US, the UK they withdrew their personnel from China and quarantined them before letting them back in.
There is that cruise ship that is quarantined in Japan.
It didn't matter if they where white or black or asian. The primary motive is the virus.
@qwerty But the woman who's reservaton was cancelled wasn't anywhere near the areas where the virus is a problem. She's from Taiwan not PRC and as she points out in the article she has spent most of the last year in Tokyo.
How is this different from not calling a guy for an interview because his name is "Tyrone" and you're scared of inner city crime?
(untagging everyone else in case they aren't really interested in continuing this thread)
@z There are people in Taiwan who just happened to pass by Hong Kong coming back from Italy. They got infected! The current count of infected in HK is in the 50s yet these Taiwanese breached the odds and got infected.
Inside the U.S. Coronavirus Quarantine
@qwerty There's been a bit more than one asymptomatic case in Canada, should we shut down that border? The only evidence they had that she might be a risk was her name. They had no way to evaluate how much of a risk she posed other than her race. They made a judgment call based completely on race. How is that not racist?
@z All I am arguing for is that the particular individual who denied service was more likely to be motivated by fear of the virus then bias towards asian race.
@qwerty Isn't that kind of the "well in their heart of heart's they aren't racist"? There's two different ways that people view racism. Some people view it as a belief, but what the OP and I are asserting is that it is a behavior. It doesn't matter what social anxieties lead to the behavior.
The thing they did is racist, but yeah I would agree that these are probably not some pillow case wearing klan members.
@z you also got to consider how memory works. Most people don't have photographic memory. The brain simplifies things before storing them for long term.
Unfortunately most brains will just associate Asia with bad stuff.
Asia, virus = bad
Asia, trade war = bad
Asia, totalitarianism = bad
Asia has 3 Xs, Asia = bad
I suppose most brains are susceptible to being racist. Sorry.
@qwerty Yeah, I think that's true. Heuristics work well in a lot of situations, but when you build them on race it creates problems much bigger than just cancelling a woman's AirBnB reservation.
That's why it is important to correctly label racist behavior when it is observed because that's the only way to grapple with it.
@z I suppose but then there is the exaggeration.
@qwerty 🤷♂️ as an able bodied cishet white dude, I am a bit skeptical of my ability to judge the extent of racism/sexism etc.
Whenever I talk to women about sexism, they say it's pervasive. Whenever I talk to PoC about racism, they say it's pervasive. Whenever I talk to LGBT folks about homophobia, they say it's pervasive.
I personally don't see a lot of it, but Occam's razor.
@z well see, there ya go, I've seen the same happen with bullying. Everything is bullying. Everyone is bullying. Bullying everywhere.🤷♂️
