Very cool little offering from the folks at SDF@mastodon.sdf.org which I only just learned about, thanks to @mrguilt - historical versions of UNIX installed on VMs, accessible from your browser! unix50.org. Yes, it's Javascript, but it's for a good cause so pinch your nose and check it out.

Trying to use nextcloud social app, but maybe it's just not ready yet. I can't see any messages from here on there or vice versa

@strypey

Back in the GTalk days, you could talk to your entire Google contacts list via federated XMPP.

So even back then I had way more contacts on XMPP than GNUSocial or Identica.

Google played a large role in killing off XMPP usage and the day they announced sunsetting GTalk was when I realized they're just another embrace-extend-extinguish monopolist.

Society needs self-hostable, scalable and functional alternatives to surveillance capitalist systems of manipulation and censorship.

It is really quite damning.

* Facebook deliberately obscured from users what information they were collecting about them & how to opt out

* Facebook used its monopoly to cripple competing applications and services

* Facebook signed agreements to acquire data other app developers collected in exchange for some of its own

* Companies could circumvent user permissions by signing an agreement with Facebook

installed OpenBSD on my Thinkpad this morning, dual booting with Manjaro(which I'm thinking about replacing). Next, I might try to install OpenBSD on a Raspberry Pi 3. Just doing it to learn more about BSD.
