I've been enjoying Edsger W. Dijkstra's surprisingly readable lecture notes on programming from the 60s & 70s. I enjoy this quote from 1972's "Humble Programmer" essay: "The competent programmer is fully aware of the strictly limited size of his own skull; therefore he approaches the programming task in full humility, and among other things he avoids clever tricks like the plague."
