Have you ever experienced sleep without unconsciousness?

It's quite unlike, I think, either "lucid dreaming" or "hypnotic trance", but obviously a relative of both.

@publius I tend to have vivid, and sometimes lucid dreams. But I've also had times when I went to sleep but do not remember doing so, if that's what you mean.

Oh no, I was asleep, but at least marginally conscious the whole time. I was aware of going through the REM & non-REM phases, I could tell when I was dreaming, & so forth. I could also hear the people in the apartment upstairs walking about, tell what position I was lying in & how the sun was coming through the window, et cetera.
