I once read a talk transcript (IIRC) where the speaker asserted that the main driver for breaking game consoles’ DRM was to run Linux. For evidence, they pointed to the PS3’s very long streak of unbroken DRM compared to competing consoles, a streak that only ended when Sony pushed the update that disabled Linux booting.
