Many thanks to Humble Bundle and their community of supporters who used purchases of books and games to raise money for digital rights! We at EFF are deeply grateful for you.

Every now and then I remember that the first person to isolate phosphorus had a process that started with “take 150 barrels of horse urine and leave them out in the sun until the maggots appear” and then I look at whatever I’m working on and think, maybe this isn’t that bad, maybe this has more potential than I realize.

The thing I really want to find in a dumpster or at a charity shop is a PC that I could use for producing a live stream with decently complicated browser-generated on-screen scenes in OBS. Ideally with a few cameras and maybe a capture card.

i.e. I want a semi-trash computer that still does well enough to do a live stream from my workshop

RFK Jr. Says There Are No Autistic Poets. We Asked an Autistic Poet. – Mother Jones

motherjones.com/politics/2025/

The evil stupidity of this fool is unspeakable...

This Trump family crypto empire is set to profit precisely because Trump is gutting the regulations that would normally constrain it — brazen self-dealing that represents perhaps the most flagrant exploitation of presidential authority in American history.

as someone who is active on the FreeBSD Discord...

i hate Discord with the passion of a thousand suns. it is a terrible platform, it is completely proprietary, and its users are in for a rude awakening once they start seriously chasing revenue.

but despite all of that, Deb's job includes doing community outreach, and many users, potential users, and potential committers are on Discord. and it was Discord admins who put the work in to organise this AMA, to run it and to moderate it.

it's fine to say “we should have stuff on open platforms", i entirely agree. i would never organise an AMA on Discord. but i’m not the one putting the effort in to organise AMAs at all.

it's not Deb's fault that she went where the users are, and it's not the Discord admins' fault that they organised on the platform they use. ultimately, it's not anyone's fault, but if you want to see community outreach happen on other platforms, someone (like you) needs to step up and make this happen.

I remember the earlyish days of USENET. When somebody being really obnoxious resulted in a email or phone call to the sysadmin or similar in their faculty. That did not scale.

@jmcclure When I was a kid I used to like to yell at strangers on the Internet, too. But we didn't call it that yet.

Elon Musk bought a global microphone and used it to prove he’s the dumbest guy at his own dinner party.

The Trumps have cashed out around $390 million from their memecoins. A month after their launch, the SEC stated that memecoins do not fall under SEC authority.

While there have been some attempts by Democratic Senators to sound the alarm with various agencies, these agencies are largely under Trump’s control. If there’s been any action on their letters, it hasn’t publicly materialized.

This is a dangerous convergence of the president’s financial interests and his power to shape policy, and it poses serious risks to all of us.

Ars Technica only rarely resorts to op-eds. When it does, tends to be powerful.

"This is not a breeze; this is the whirlwind. And it will leave a state-dependent, nationalist university system in its wake unless academia arises, feels its own power, and non-violently resists."

As is remarked therein, failure to organize will likely be fatal. As with labor vs. management, organization wins to the extent it's not countered with other organization.
