@djsundog @phooky modern DRAM is so challenging to initialize that the cpu runs in Cache-As-RAM (CAR) mode until it the x86 firmware blob has finished link training.

@roadriverrail @neauoire took me a moment to find this again, but here's a good background-listen on the subject: youtube.com/watch?v=pW-SOdj4Kk

I've been a software engineer for almost 10 years now and I still keep going back to the basics (possibly because I didn't study software engineering nor computer science in university). Every time I'm reminded of how with a few basic constructs one can achieve a lot. Then I think of real-world jobs I've had, where tools and abstractions abound, but there's often little substance.

Congratulations to NASA and JPL on their amazing landing of the Perseverance rover! By working together and using science, you have truly shown what humans are capable of! 🚀

Here is a good interview about what #TILvids is all about! Take a look if you're interested in a deeper dive about what we're trying to do, and thanks to @tomat0 for the nice write-up!

In case you missed it, a couple of years ago Mastodon made an animated introduction explaining how it works.

✅ Mastodon's official promo video is available on PeerTube at tilvids.com/videos/watch/887e7 and on YouTube at youtube.com/watch?v=IPSbNdBmWK

The same video is also useful for explaining federated networks in general.

@dokoissho If you don't want to host your twtxt.txt in a place of your choosing — mine is at SDF nicolagi.sdf.org/twtxt.txt — you can get an account on this "pod" twtxt.net/, AFAIK. But I haven't tried the latter.

@dnjp Got it, thank you for clearing up that minor mystery for me! I'm a bit surprised though: I only scroll with b1/b3, and I love the surgical precision of that; I can point and click at what I want to be the last/first displayed line that way. I sometime drag while holding b2 if I'm looking for something. I don't use the scroll wheel nor arrow keys. (I use acme more often than sam, but scroll in the same way.)

Hi Daniel, could you elaborate? You're not the first to mention this and I'd like to understand more if you don't mind sharing (especially considering I'm quite okay with how scrolling works). @dnjp

I think developers should be forced to use older/low power/low spec hardware when developing so that they stop making shit so unbelievably heavy.

Since (integer) arithmetic came up recently, I thought I'd share something on the other end of the spectrum:

@dokoissho looks like you really have to upgrade git9 somehow!

Nic boosted

@chaosmonk thanks 😊 I love how 9front forces me into a more slow computer life. I keep the frenzy state of modern computing on my work machine and my pocket device and so far so good!

In Plan 9, the same idea is used to support both containers and VPNs, and it knows of neither

@coding No, I'm not okay with that language. That wasn't the GitHub issue I was reading at the time.

... but after all that's accurate and consistent, quite fitting for this OS. :)

Finally completed a game of mahjongg. And I was greeted by the same "game over" message I get when I lose. :o :(
