year editor
For 2020 I'm going to do my best to use as my editor and will do my best to leave as much as I can of the Apple.Amazon.Facebook.Google. clubs behind

@umgeher I've been working through the tutorial. It's very nice so far.

@mnw emacs is awesome. You can do anything with it.

@umgeher That's part of the draw for me. As I read more about it I realize that the philosophy and community around emacs is very much aligned with how I think about things. Learning elisp wasn't on my radar but I think it maybe coming up sometime

@xxzozaxx @umgeher I've been educated about so many plugins and modules that today was a bit of a blur. I figured out how to wipe out my emacs.d directory and what that does to the editor. I also found out about the emacs bootstrap site and that helm vs ivy is a big debate. I'm not sure what that means yet, but I feel good about progress made.

You'll find a lot of folx on here that use a lot. Ask if you have any questions.

@mnw Yeah Facebook is my first big target. Have to write up the insanity of effort it took for me to get the data I needed out of it. I want to work on Amazon and Google too. I have a feeling I'm going to be using iOS devices for a long time but I'm looking forward to playing with PinePhone and/or Librem when they come out to give a college try of a non-vendor lock phone.

@hankg I totally understand. I have so many contacts and relationships that only exist on these platforms. I'm fortunate in that I have a work phone and a personal phone. For my personal phone I can switch over to some android phone I guess and remove the Google apps. Facebook I'm planning to switch to using the web client on my phone so it doesn't get all my device data or gps data I'm thinking. and then Amazon is going to be the toughest for me. I'll prob stop buying books first.

@mnw A few years ago when I was not happy with something Apple did I fired up an old Android dev test device I had and used it as my phone for a week. It wasn't too bad. It was more based on open source. Last year when I went to extract all the data Apple and Google had tracked on me I was in shock how much more data Google had on me from that one week than the entirety of the years of data Apple had. Worse is that Google doesn't (maybe they fixed it) honor the no tracking settings. So for me it's Apple or a Linux phone if it is up to snuff.
