I don't know how to explain it, but often when I am watching a live-action Japanese film, I wish it were a mini-series, instead. And sometimes, I wish a Japanese series was a movie.

I am fascinated by this, because it seems like there is a cultural narrative pacing that I am unused to, and I want to understand why I notice it.

Is there a name for that? "Cultural narrative pacing"?

An example of this is the live-action Kiki's Delivery Service. It feels like every 15 minutes they add a new, fascinating and completely unexplored secondary plot, and I really want to see a 45 minutes episode committed to each.

Maybe it is more magical this way, because viewers get to discuss what might have happened, what those side stories are saying... , ?!
