trying to figure out how I can make my little Pi 4 +touchscreen system completely solar-powered (I already have a panel)… it *should* be possible but maybe not, I’m guessing the display may be too power-hungry… eventually I’ll figure it out! maybe can find a more efficient display and design my own case or something. dunno, just love the idea of having a cool little computer that can be completely off-grid! macbook doesn’t count lol 😂

solar pi

@amatecha Does it have to be movable or is it more of a stationary thing?

solar pi

@neauoire well movable will be part of the fun! I mean, sure it’ll be used on a desk/table, but I’m picturing being at some distant off-grid forest cabin or whatever (purely imagination on my part lol, I don’t have such a place sadly), or chillaxing on a mountainside after some offroad adventures or something haha

solar pi

@amatecha You could do

solar panel -> charge controller -> 12v car battery -> RV-type usb port hub => pi power supply & screen power supply

solar pi

@neauoire Hmmm true, I was picturing using one of those Pi Hat UPS setups so I can go from plugged in to temporarily-portable on the fly, laptop style. SmartiPi case has that USB split cable so you can power the Pi and 7” screen from a single source. But if I use a HAT UPS then I can power the display via Pi GPIO pins, a vendor-approved setup. I’m just trying to make it as “self-contained” as possible, just on a whim haha (no hard requirement by any means)

solar pi

@amatecha

Well, try it out :) See what works for you. A note:

> SmartiPi case has that USB split cable so you can power the Pi and 7” screen from a single source.

These die off super fast. We have a couple of dead ones. It's not enough to power anything beyond a 3B.

solar pi

@neauoire what dies off, the splitter?! ... that's good to know. I mean, I can power the Pi directly, and power the display from GPIO (as described in cdn-shop.adafruit.com/product- ) ... but the more I think about this, I feel like an e-ink display might make more sense. I'm not intending to play games or watch movies, and I am personally not actually liking this crazy-bright official 7" display lol

solar pi

@neauoire lightweight stuff, coding, learning more *NIX stuff, C, whatever other world of software I've missed out on by using almost exclusively Mac/Win for the past many years... mastodon/IRC/hotline, maybe finally try orca lol :)

solar pi

@neauoire it's like, I'm not even sure man. I just feel so disillusioned with the OSes and software I use day-to-day and am working towards something I feel more aligned with "ideologically". all-open, low-footprint, etc.. .. I am glad for all the ppl on mastodon who embrace those principles and live by them, very inspiring to me.

solar pi

@amatecha Going from OSX to raspbian, you're going to hate it, y'know that right?

solar pi

@neauoire haha, what makes you say that? I’m already using OpenBSD with cwm on my Pi 4 in the smartipi case! it’s awesome! years ago (like 2005) I ran Slackware with fluxbox as my main OS too. plus still gotta try Plan9 of course. I’m thinking of trying that on my Pi Zero W, after reading someone’s post about that.

solar pi

@amatecha Oh wow, then you'll be alright, I didn't like working on the pi for a long time, everything was crashing all the time and looked terrible. It was a pretty steep curve. But it looks like you'll be fine :)

solar pi

@neauoire Ooohh, right, I see what you mean. Yeah it’s partly learning exercise for me, to get more in-depth knowledge of UNIX world (and other OSes), cuz it’s like a whole area of computing which has so much opportunity or future IMO, and more open, not controlled by the whims of shareholder-driven corporations etc. Like I said before about the sorta “ideological” aspect… And also because programming is “first-class citizen” on these OSes, tooling is powerful, free and open, always.

solar pi

@amatecha In that case you should go straight to 9front, and skip linux on rpi :glenda:

solar pi

@neauoire nice, OK I’ll try plan9 next. The Pi image is as recent as Jan 2021, which is great! it seems to be somewhat actively maintained, super cool ( 9p.io/sources/contrib/miller/ )

solar pi

@neauoire Oh damn, OK LOL I'll go for 9front then hahaha

solar pi

@neauoire Ohhh, I think I got put off by the kinda excessive strange meme stuff on the 9front documentation that led me to believe they are just messing around 😅 like what the hell is this ? fqa.9front.org/fqa1.html hahaha , programs like "derp" and "bullshit"? whaaat?! 😂

@amatecha @neauoire Maybe our professionally crafted web presence at 9fs.net is more convincing?

solar pi

@kvik @neauoire haha! I did see that, good intro indeed. The 9front.org site had me like “errr wait is this… even a plan9 site or… did I click the wrong link?” hahaha, slightly more character, and culturally-contextual references, than I’m used to for software stuff! :’D of course that doesn’t obviate technical quality or anything, to be sure. I am looking forward to trying it out. I’ve been watching a few videos in advance, too!
