troff/groff writing workflow question

Anybody know of any good troff how-to’s? Pandoc can output .ms files and they work with the groff ms macros, but they don’t work with the ms macros on 9...

I’ve done a tiny amount of LaTeX but never touched troff, and I’m trying to see how much of my writing workflow I can move to 9front.

troff/groff writing workflow question

@kl I started writing papers on 9front with troff. First I used .me, later .ms. I used this chance to learn more about troff in general and the macros, and I recommend to learn troff itself and see the existing macro packages only as convenience tools. I happened to write some helper awk script for converting some markdown-like script to troff ms.

@kl as a bonus, I ported some of the old Unix tools called the Writer's Workbench (wwb) from UnixV10 to plan 9. The tools are not really open source, but you can use them for personal purposes. See git.sr.ht/~sirjofri/wwb9 .

Tools include grammar checks, spell checks, things you should not write with suggestions, and style information with sentence complexity, sentence length and more. Most smaller tools aren't ported yet.

@sirjofri these are really helpful repos. I should add, I’m mostly writing fiction. My workflow before I started getting into 9 was Org mode to Markdown for web and Org mode to Word for edits and submissions... so this is a different way of approaching it. I’m enjoying it, though.

@kl you probably want to ask @sl then (eg on freenode cat-v or wherever you meet him)
