@Jo NSA standards (can’t speak to GPDR but I doubt they are more stringent) for keytape disposal, which is somewhat similar to typewriter ribbon, allows shredding it. If you don’t have an industrial shredder you could just feed it into a shredder that’s locked on and I suspect it would pull it in off the reel.
