The first type of commercial nuclear power station. Moderated by graphite, cooled by carbon-dioxide gas. Fuel is natural uranium metal canned in an alloy optimistically termed "magnesium, non-oxidizing", which gave its name to the whole system. Used primarily in Great Britain, derived from the dual-purpose Calder Hall and Chapelcross type. First unit, Berkeley 1, was grid connected in 1962. Last operating unit, Wylfa 1, was shut down at the end of 2015.

"I appreciate SDF but it's a general-purpose server and the name doesn't make it obvious that it's about art." - Eugen Rochko
