Copyright defenders ugh

Hypothesis: it is impossible to write anything about corporate rent-seeking through copyright abuses without someone jumping into your replies to be like "Okay but small artists"

more pictures of donegal from errigal on sunday - these ones were shot and edited by Mairéad so the quality is noticeably better 😊

Academic Covid-19 paper snark

I found it

The worst paper on Covid-19

Mashamba-Thompson, T. P. & Crayton, E. D. Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence Technology for Novel Coronavirus Disease-19 Self-Testing. Diagnostics (Basel) 10, (2020).

academic journals, ethics

welp. It's finally happened. I've been put on an editorial board of an academic journal without my consent. Somewhat ironically, it's the International Journal of Technoethics.

It sounded almost like someone spoke, but I was alone in the kitchen.
I opened the fridge.
"Are you all right?"
I stared at the sourdough.
"Did you just talk?"
"I've been with your family for generations. What's wrong?"
I told it. It's a good listener.

If you're a developer and not an english native speaker, which language do you use for your development tools?

Please don't answer if you're a native english speaker, not to bias the results. Boosts appreciated :)

I've a Vlandian vassal in Bannerlord beta and I make shit ton of money when it's wartime. Guess that means it's economically realistic in a sad way.

It's raining in Istanbul and it's not your usual summer drizzle.

Landlord of my Ankara flat called me yesterday asking me if it flooded. B/c I'm stuck in Istanbul, I asked a neigbour and he says it's okay in around our quarters.

Is this global warming or is 2020 the Nature Pranks Humans Hard year?

@cadadr yep. It’s just an online version of trad advertising. It’s easier and cheaper to keep the customers you have than bring in new ones, and if your customers are happy they’ll recommend you to their friends which is more effective than advertising anyway.

@cadadr actually some ads look superficially like they want you to buy a thing you’ve not got, but in fact they want you to appreciate the thing you’ve got so you don’t cancel your subscription or switch to a different brand.

UBlock Origin: *silently, reliably, customisably and granularly blocks 100s of thousands of requests without making no fuss even once in years*

You buy a tshirt, see t-shirt ads everywhere, which is stupid, but I can understand the logic. I might just buy an other one. Because if you need 3 tees, you but it in 3 batches, not at once 🤦‍♂️

But since my trial ended YouTube shows me nothing but ads for apps I already have. I won't buy thay Netflix sub for a 2nd time, why would I?

All that surveillance, all that money, and all you can come up with is this? Apps that I have installed on the very phone I see these ads?

@MatejLach @isagalaev , luckily with $60 you can have an RPI with Linux ready to meet all your standard user needs 🙂

This is what I mean by Apple must be careful in how they proceed here. We think mass general purpose computing has started? Not even; there may be 1 billion smartphones but the majority of these users are not using them for general computing. It takes 1 company to start producing stupid cheap computers.
