every time they ask to use "Times font" I put in Brill (sometimes falling back to Charis for complex IPA). and if they ask "Arial" (for body) I put in Myriad. (unless page counts are involved.)
So far nobody has ever complained about it.
I think "Times" and "Arial" are often used as lay terms for "serif" and "sans".
@melissaboiko Maybe one day academic publishing evolves and we can just submit using some plain text markup + SVG + MathML, and not need to worry about fonts and other typographic details.
