They either need to outlaw the lottery or legalize gambling.

@art same with stock market, lottery, traditional gambling and stock market are basically all the same thing just different target demographic

@sieri @art I'd disagree that it's the same thing. Stock market is at least tangible value, i.e. I believe in "Pickles™" products so why can't I become a part of their process?

Lottery and gambling is just statistical hack with no real value other than entertainment and parting fools of their money which I guess has some sort societal value.

@sieri @art or participating in a democratic process of shared economy :blobdab:

@Wraptile Praying on adicts to get money isn't societal value you should asprire too

@Wraptile > Lottery and gambling is just statistical hack with no real value other than entertainment and parting fools of their money which I guess has some sort societal value.

You think this is a good thing

@Wraptile Nope, if you're not clear it's your fault. But good to know that exploitation is a societal value for you.

Nice capitalist

@art I like the idea of state-ran lotteries as a way to allow gambling without it profiting to private interests. This way states don't appear too restrictive while their budget is profiting from the scheme, ideally profiting everybody in the state equally. They can even afford to make their game fairer to the players than private-ran ones that need that sweet sweet margin.
@art @Lofenyy I don’t like how lottery exploits our inherent biases either, selling false hopes to people who needs more money than hopes. But the drive to gamble exists, and so no lottery would be hard to enact, I expect you’d have illegal lotteries going, the same way Prohibition favored criminal gangs running moonshine to speakeasies.

So state-run lotteries are a useful compromise for me, channelling this drive without lining up legal crooks’ pockets.

@hypolite @art This would be great, if it didn't impact the poor disproportionately. The people who should be paying more in taxes don't play the lotto, and people who shouldn't be paying extra taxes are throwing their money away on it.

Back When I worked in a factory, I saw people who had trouble making ends meet dropping fifty dollars a paycheck on lotto, praying it would get them out of financial trouble. Saw one of them win $65k. He was worse off after all the bad decisions that followed.

@art @CarlCravens I'm with you, but as I explained in a follow-up post, gambling isn't going away so state-ran lottery is the least worst outcome for me: friendica.mrpetovan.com/displa…

@hypolite @art It's a complicated problem, for sure. Of the two, I'll take lotto, but more and more states are legalizing gambling.

@art In all honesty, Thoth did gambled with the Moon, so that new gods could be born.
