Please, if you listen to nothing else I say, listen to this: Talk to your depressed friends. Don't be afraid to reach out to them. Don't expect them to have the energy and presence of mind to reach out to the people they need to.
Reach out to them and try whatever you can to slow, stop, or counteract their spiral. Because if you leave them alone, they will not fix themself.
Consider the hacker.
We deal in arts and occult knowledge not possessed by the masses.
We are the modern equivalent of a shaman, high priest, or wizard.
We use occult knowledge, secret languages, and passphrase to summon technological constructs into reality.
Our scripts are golems.
Our circles of defense are just that.
By the way, a friend asked me if it would be possible to write something similar to the program Ken Thompson wrote in C for his article "Reflections on Trusting Trust", but this time in Lisp. I still have to revisit the article, but it sounded like something fun to think about from scratch.
I think I'll also write a blog-- I mean, phlogpost about it pretty soon.
Lisp! C! Forth! APL! Unix!
