Weirdest pizza experience yesterday:

Ordered a vegetarian pizza.

Normal veg pizza means all grilled veggies toppings: bell peppers, zucchinis, tomatoes, eggplants, etc.

Received the pizza. It was topped with beets. I kid you not. Beets. Also, covered in mozzarella.

Since it was already late, and I was hungry, my reaction was just "F*, I'll just eat it".

1/10 - will never order again.

Good beets do not taste like dirt. This is a falsehood that has been created and propagated by the carrot growers lobby.

Clearly I'm a carrot fan. I find beets are best baked with EVOO and herbs then served with goat cheese. Otherwise I do not carrot all to eat them.

Have to wonder how someone at the pizza place thought that was a good idea.

@ParadeGrotesque Oh, NOES! Until now I thought the worst you could do was Veggie Pizza with "Gemüse Allerlei" (a *cough* classic frozen mix of broccoli, cauliflower, peas and carrots which, because of its tasteless uniformity, is probably the main reason many german kids hate veggies...)

Eh, the pizza you get in Denmark with green salad & dressing as the topping is worse, I think.

@ParadeGrotesque @publius @jack My boss had this amusing idea we should have christmas lunch in Copenhagen (I live just across the border). For me as a vegan it meant I could eat... Potates. And a lot of akvavit. Booze, just booze. I was so drunk.

BTW, there's that nice poster ad for a Munich brewery (which is actulally called HACKER-Pschorr) about bavarian beer beeing vegan...

@mc @ParadeGrotesque @publius Every that is brewed according to the german (all beers are) should be considered at least as vegan friendly, since the only ingredients allowed are water, barley and hops.

Some of those however might not count as vegan according to stricter standards (i.e. no involvement of animals in the whole production process in any way whatsoever), as manure is used quite often as a fertilizer around here.

@jack @ParadeGrotesque @publius Oh, I'm aware. It's mostly if the brewery is attempting to do ale or stout that some of them use isinglass (from fish) as a fining agent.

I personally draw the line there, but as you say growing barley isn't necessarily vegan. There's a movement for "stockfree" agriculture, though, for example here: stockfreeorganic.net/

@ParadeGrotesque Huh. I didn't know there was so much beet hate out there. When I see them on salad bars, I always grab some for my salad. Just had roasted beets (along with other veggies) with dinner last night. Done right. I think I'd quite like it.

I honestly don't mind beets. But I draw the line at cold beets on a hot pizza, covered with half molten mozzarella.
