I recently found out that I’m a sucker for the “super spy fights petty crime” genre. First for me there was the Burn Notice TV show (2007-2013), then The Equalizer movies (2014, 2018, 2023) and then The Beekeeper (2024).

I believed it was a recent trend that highlighted a disillusionment for regular spy movies with higher stakes, but during my cursory research for this post I learned The Equalizer started out as a TV show in 1985?

Definitely an older trope than I thought.

@hypolite those and lawyer shows I think get the best serial writers. Dr shows are hit or miss (house and mash are the good ones) . The thing they all get in common is they can show the banality of evil type stuff, sneak in social commentary, and put in enough absurdity to lighten things with comedic moments.

@Netux That's a good observation, I never thought about that aspect. The main legal show I watched was Suits (2011-2019) and I only have vague memories of it. I've never been interested in medical shows though.

@hypolite for lawyer shows my two favorites (along with suits being right up there) The Practice, and it's spin-off Boston Legal (James spader and captain kirk)

Law and order is more soap opera melodrama without the softening that the shows need to really shine for me. Better call Saul is supposed to be good, but I didn't watch it or breaking bad.
