New to Mastodon?

Did you know that posts scroll in one of two directions: rantwise and widdershins.

I'm puzzled by the Mastodon moderation tool for trending posts.

I'm getting emails letting me know trending toots need to be reviewed. The UI for trending toots implies that I'm deciding whether anyone on my instance can see those toots.

However, I checked the Mastodon docs, and it sounds like trending toots are just an API feature that clients might poll -- and as far as I can tell, the ones I'm using don't.

Reviewing all those toots is looking like a big job. So how important is it?

"Sure, I'll help moderate," I said.

"Thanks. Here's the backlog of trending posts."

It just crossed my mind that GMing a role-playing game is one of the few contexts in which second-person narration is common.

Posting this from toot, the Mastodon CLI client. I was a little skeptic at first, but it's a pretty cool client actually! Just apt-get it and you're done.

fun thing about mastodon is that most instances have some very clear code of conduct and people with right-wing politics almost always violate them. so if you find a right-winger on a non-right-wing instance, you can go through their toots and find something to report. if they're on an instance that tolerates them, you can block their instance and ask your instance's mods to block it too

A review of The Bright Ages, a general history of medieval Europe for a popular audience. The review explains how, despite a superficial examination of the problem of "whiteness", the book ends up reaffirming "whiteness" by centering the white perspective and ignoring current scholarship.

Seeing a lot of people weirded out that "Masto admins can read your DMs!"

Unless it's end-to-end encrypted, any admin of any system you use — Twitter, Facebook, Slack, GMail, etc — can do that.

hope this helps

Remember when 6 workers died at an Amazon warehouse in Illinois because they were told to keep working during a tornado and the building collapsed on them? Apparently Amazon’s only punishment for this crime is a sternly worded letter from OSHA. reuters.com/world/us/us-issues

NYC shouldn't be looking for ways to end subway fare evasion. It should be looking for ways to end subway fares. The best price to use a subway is zero, just like the best price to walk down the sidewalk is zero.

Remember March-April 2020, when everything shut down? And in early 2021, when everyone was hoping that was the worst it'd get? If I try to think through the implications of the general sentiment (and messaging from our ostensible leaders nationally and at The Company) that we're through the pandemic and on the right course to recovery, it's just stunning.

Anyway, rant over for now. Time to feed a kid and take a break.

Thanks to all who've spoken up with support. We aren't doing too badly yet, but it is so dispiriting to see the dystopia unfolding around us. Gotta push to do better than just watch.

People at work are getting sick, too. I'm continuing to work from home as much as I can, but The Company is encouraging people to come back into the office. Both my spouse and I have had people we report to come down with COVID-19 after they had their kids at home for the MA spring holiday last week.

I don't feel so bad about our personal situation, but it's like living in a madhouse.

That will change if anyone at home starts showing symptoms. But by the time either kid starts showing symptoms, they may have been infectious for at least a day already. The MA policy really seems like a reactive stance, geared towards keeping kids in school and adults at work. It's asinine.
